Carriage of liquids



The new EU regulation on carriage of liquids in aircraft cabin entered into force on 6 November 2006. The regulation is applied in all EU countries plus in Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, which also implement the EU security regulation.

The regulation restricts the quantity of liquids allowed to be taken into the cabin as hand baggage. Any liquids that a passenger intends to bring on board with him/her must be shown at security check.

The regulation strives to prevent the threat of liquid explosives used for terrorism. The aim is to protect everyone travelling by air.

What is meant by liquids?


The definition of liquids in the regulation covers:
e.g. liquid and viscous substances, gels, pastes and lotions, such as toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, gel lipstick, perfume, contact lens fluid, shaving foam and aerosols.

Liquids do not include:
e.g. solid lipstick, lip cream, medicine tablets, powders.
